23/31 - Work in progress ...

I'm playing catch up with my Every Day in May postings, I'm a day behind which i will remedy by this evening! I thought I would show you where I am up to with a canvas I am doing for a friend. I am using a different approach than i normally use (my usual drawing shapes and colouring them in!) I'm 'building' the painting starting with a Yellow Ochre wash on the canvas, rough positioning of elements and then adding light, dark and then building the colour and highlights in. I need to leave it a couple of days now to live with it before putting some detail in - I'll post the results (plus the wonderful story that goes with it!) I think i'm happiest, splashing paint all over the place, when I'm using pen and ink I concentrate too hard and get a headache!

Beautiful as is. I'm sure the more stunning when it's all in. The comp is excellent. Classic looking.

I am afraid my one commenter on http://onionboy.ca/blogofo/?p=1304 would be justified by this work if he was to compare it with my, as he says "light and colourful indulgencies are a manor [unfit] for a working artist" :) Really, while I am feeling grand about my tiny (so called) paintings, this work here does make me pause to consider the possible truth of what he's saying.

Wow! You get the most amazing light in your paintings (and I think I start every comment I post with "wow" ... I'll have to get more creative). It just amazes me that you can do such detailed, tight drawings and than turn around and do loose and painterly on canvas. Wow ... again.

This works so well - looking forward to see it when it's finished. You're right about it being a fantastic subject and I love the way you've got the light on her dress. The smoke is fantastic too. Excellent stuff.

Can't wait to see the finished piece and read the story - it's already intriguing. The light and movement are hinting at a story already i think.
