Never ending painting

I did a painting for Sarah. It replaced the many I did for her and then sold (kids needed shoes on their feet, it was Winter), so I made it really personal for her. It's a large canvas with coloured squares on it with little paintings in each of the squares, the cool thing is the way it can be added to every now and again. I've put some more images onto it today - here's a couple. I've developed a liking for labels. Isn't it funny when you zone in on something and then you see similar things over and over. I saw an exhibition in Lincoln where an artist had used keys and labels in a old wardrobe, typed on an old typewriter. I then saw a similar thing in an exhibition in the gallery in Manchester at the weekend, you take some lables and then post them back to the gallery from all over the world. Another artist Andrew Gadd did a wonderful piece with a picture of a woman clothed completely in labels - love his work by the way. So here is my scaled down stolen, use of the idea!

What did you paint it with that you can keep going back into it? My husband keeps dropping hints that lead me to believe he'd like a drawing/painting of his car for Christmas. I hate drawing cars, but I'll probably end up doing it. I spend so much time here in my little art world, I owe him. ;-)

I'll post the full picture one day! It's a narrative, the things we did and the things she likes and ... it's cheaper than flowers!I've done a few for different people, which starts as a conversation, what things do you like, what things do you carry around with you etc. I make them into something like a patchwork quilt. Heres an idea... draw nine squares, pick details from the car, stitching from the seat, steering wheel, the reflection from the chrome any spare squares - add a colour, like the paint colour, seat colour and so on... He'll get a painting of his car, you don't have to paint a car! Job done! Or I'm talking crap and it was a bad idea! :-)

Love the idea and I would very much like to see the full picture some day. Welcome to EDM!

I love the idea of your painting and am sort of doing that with an assemblage--it'll NEVER be done and shouldn't be. Your solution for the car drawing is perfect---please keep us posted with your creative thoughts and great to see work...E J Mordasky

Hi Stephen,
Welcome to EDM – it is such an inspiration group (certainly changed my life as I have only started watercolour painting in the last 2 years and EDM has really spurred me on)
I love your work and look forward to seeing more ...

P.S. I hope you sit next to me so I can ask for hints and help

Wow! I'm glad Karen asked that question! You are not "talking crap " at all! A brilliant approach to a difficult subject....I may just have to give the idea a "go" for my DH too ! Thanks for the thought! :)

So whilst you were over in Manchester, this weekend, I was over in your neck of the woods.

I know exactly what you mean about seeing the same themes. It can be really annoying but, lets face it, there are no original ideas. It's just the spin you put on it, right?

I really really like the ideas in this piece. And the thought of adding to it, bit by bit, is gorgeous. I guess that's one of the good things about using oils or acrylics (both of which scare me way too much).

Absolutely LOVE the baggage label. And, yes, I had to enlarge it to see if it was a photo.

Hey, thanks for coming back for another look and introducing me to EDM! I'm in a sweety shop and don't know what to look at next! The peice I'm doing for Sarah is like a portrait but more subtle (the label does not infer baggage - let me make that clear!)It's all the things she likes - two of the squares have the childrens handprints in them. Hey, next time you are over this side of the Pennines, drop in for a brew!
